Trees More Suited to Limited Space

The following is a list of trees more suited to urban subdivisions with smaller backyards.  The trees listed below that say "canopy trees" will have size and form that will allow you to walk under them comfortably with proper pruning - so you can put patio furniture under them (Caution - we don't recommend any fabric covered furniture under any trees - staining and bird poop will follow) )

Red Bud. - 30 foot canopy tree. Full Sun to light shade - tends to grow quickly so needs regular pruning

Flowering Crab- 30 foot canopy tree - Full sun.   Get apple scab resistant varieties

White Cedar - 45 feet - Full sun. evergreen.  Great screen tree

Yew (tree form -  English Yew is best)  - 35 feet. Full sun to light shade - tough evergreen urban tree

Amur Maple - 30 feet canopy tree - full sun.  Brilliant fall colours.  needs to be pruned regularly to keep form

Paperbark Maple - 40 foot canopy tree - full sun to light shade. Beautiful bark and fall colours

Flowering (Japanese) Lilac - tree form.  Full sun.  25 feet. Needs to be pruned regularly to keep landscape form

Katsura - 40  ft canopy tree.  Full sun.    Nice conical shape.  Brilliant Yellows (sometimes red too) in fall.

Pawpaw.  40 to 50 feet canopy tree. Full sun to light shade. Produces edible fruit in full sun.

Golden Chain Tree - 30 to 35 feet canopy tree. Full sun.  Prominent Yellow Flowers.

Mountain Ash - 25 to 30 feet. Full Sun.  brilliant red berries.  Suffers from Sapsucker damage when older.

Blue Beech  (musclewood)- 20 feet canopy tree. light to full shade. 

Tricolor Beech (non pyramidal form) 40 foot canopy tree. pink/purple leaves

Ironwood. 40 feet canopy tree.  light shade

 Glenleven Linden. 50 foot canopy tree (rarely 70 feet).  full sun.  Lindens prone to Honeydew

Turkish Hazel (tree form) . 25 to 40 feet canopy tree.  Full sun.

Serviceberry  -  25 feet canopy tree. can handle full sun but light shade is better. 

 Saucer Magnolia - 30- 40 foot tree. full sun. Can be a canopy tree but often produces Honeydew (due to bugs)

Flowering Dogwoods.  15 to 25 ft tree.   full sun to light shade
