Butternut Canker

'Black open wounds on the trunk like on the lower part of this butternut are tell tale signs a tree has butternut canker (Port Stanley, ont. 2022)

Not much to say on this one.  If you have a Butternut and it has black open wounds on the trunk then it has Butternut Canker. Butternut Canker is a fungus that quickly spreads around the circumference of the tree from its point of infection and eventually chokes the trunk. Unfortunately,  there is no treatment for butternut canker and it will nearly always kill the tree.

What's more, Butternut trees are considered a Endangered Species  and are not to be cut down so  you need a "Certified Butternut Health Assessor" to prepare a report and permission from  the provincial  government to confirm the tree does have butternut canker and is non retainable  before it can be cut down.  More information is available at the Provincial Government Link below.
